Look at it from the bright side, you can thank someone and he will be aware of it. Because now if you Applaud someone he will not know that was you or at what post someone did it. I mean someone help you with his post on your threat and its stupid to write another post just to say "Thank you", so you hit the button and he will know you appreciate what he did...

How are you gonna know who spit on your karma without this option? :D

you give too much significance to the karma system, at least more than i do
one thing you could do is actually give it some more
something like optional forum "rank" if the member has a very good ratio
who knows, people might become nicer just for it
