Big potential?
Prove me wrong but if someone would invest as much money as in dota2, in torunaments and serious league with rewards then Im sure people would join it. Since icefrog stoped uprading dota maps it will be going worse and worse as it is now. Only alternative for dota1 for now is HotS...
I can.
First read div.ide's post, especially the following part.
How does old and severly limited engine have big potential?
It is old and it is limited.
The W3 editor was great for its time but nobody expected such a complex map as a DotA is.
In fact, it is more of whole new game than just an another custom map.
W3 was never made for such a map, all those mechanics that are needed...
If I remember correctly, maximum allowed size of a map was 8MB. I checked latest version, 7,9MB.
See the struggle? I bet it isn't the only one.
You were talking about money, I can assure you it isn't a problem.
Valve has money, no doubt.
But Blizzard isn't poor at all, they can do w/e they want.
Google some info about Titan - there are unconfirmed infos about this game being develeped since 2007 and cancelled in 2014.
Blizzard can spend about 7 years and 50 - 150 million dollars and then just cancel such a project because they didn't feel it would be that good game.
So it wasn't about money at all. In fact, Blizzard overslept.
They knew about DotA yet they didn't show any support for the developers, they were happy that W3 is being played because of DotA and that's all.
By the years W3 was getting old and some smart ppl said "Hey, look at this W3 DotA. They got no support from Blizzard, no patches for the editor, no help. Hell, we could make some money of it. We will create our stand alone game."
And you know who were those smart ppl? Founders of Riot Games with Pendragon and Guinsoo who run LoL and make lot of money from their 70 million unique players/month.
Blizzard woke up too late and their Blizzard DotA, that was supposed to be "DotA 2" (which was already in beta testing by Valve), was cancelled and is now being made into Heroes of the Storm.
And I don't understand your last sentence where you say that the only alternative to D1 is HotS.
HotS is supposed to be something slightly different.
BUT there's DotA 2. It doesn't have same name as a game were are talking about by a coincidence...
