I gave it a try years ago. I found the active skills odd. The need to have a skill rune in an equipment did not fit me.

But it allows you to develop 'your own' skill because of that. Since you can combine active spell gems with passive spell gems. Like, instead of one projectile you are able to get ~6 projectiles which are damaging in AoE and burning and poisoning enemies or smth else

It just didn't fit me. It was too equipment based, either wear armor with good stats or armor allowing you to use a spell.
Also, some skills took 100 exp upgrade to lvl 2, other took 250 000...
