Try Bloodline Champions, it's one of the highest rated games.

Combats are 1v1/2v2/3v3 champion(s) vs chamipns(s), it's based on Dota teamfights but without creeps and stuff like that. It's online and it's for free, I highly recommend you to try this, it should fit the game which you are looking for (from your description).

hmm both bloodline champions and quake look nice, quake actually reminds me of those oldschool days of medal of honor with freeze tag etc
