Customizable Wc3
« on: January 19, 2011, 20:42 »
Small guide to show you how to customize wc3 models, sounds and skins.

Step 1
Edit the regedit
You are going to need to edit your regedit, so that wc3 will accept third party file folders. This will safely allow you to add or delete file folders in your wc3 directory without damaging any MPQ. here is how to do it:

Ia) Go to your Search or Run.
Ib) Type in regedit, this will bring up a menu much like exploring.
II) In your regedit, you will see a left file browsing and a right open space.
IIIa) On the left, find the folder HKEY_CURRENT_USER, click the
IIIb) Now with its expansion, find the folder Software, click the
IIIc) Simply find the next folder Blizzard Entertainment, click the
IIId) That was your final expansion, what you see is all your Blizzard Programs.
IV) Highlight Warcraft 3
Va) On the right screen you will see a list of files in this folder.
Vb) Right click the open space on the right screen, go NEW > DWORD
VIa) with this new menu, type this name Allow Local Files
VIb) and keep its value at 0x00000000 (0)
VII) accept this new file, and then exit regedit.

Step 2
Finding and understanding a custom models/skins/voices
Model - A model is the actual model of the unit, the way its shaped and its animations. There is no restrictions to changing these with this method.
Skin - A skin is the way a model looks, its basically the paint file over top a model which gives its features. The only restriction to changing Skins is you can only change skins that will fit on its design model, You cant just take niaxs skin and move it onto pudges model. Cause niaxs skin only works for niaxs model.
Voice - Tested, and cannot get sounds to work with this guide.

I) you can find Models/skins/sounds here: Hive Workshop
II) You can find your filepaths here: Hero Models MPQ Locations

Step 3
Creating filepaths for your models/skins/voices
Now that you changed the regedit successfully, you need to add folders holding the files for your customized wc3.

I) To add a new file to your wc3 directory, first you must find your wc3 directory. By default it should be located at C:/Program Files/Warcraft 3
IIa) Go into your directory and right from here Create a new Folder
IIb) You will need to name your folder exactly what is on the filepath for the model/skin/voice you want. Lets do this with Vengful Spirit for example. Units\NightElf\Vengeance\Vengeance.mdx
IIc) So the name of this newly created folder is Units
IIIa) Go into this new folder, and create a new folder
IIIb) Name this folder NightElf
IIIc) Go into this folder, and create a new folder
IIId) Name this folder Vengeance
IIIe) Go into this folder and place your custom wc3 model to replace it.
IIIf) Rename this model file Vengeance.mdx
IV) You can do this with every Model/Skin/Voice, and deleting it will just make it go back to its default.
